Wairarapa College 1st XI Boys’ football are now competing in the Wellington Division 1 competition. After completing an unbeaten run through their Division 2 grading games they earned themselves a promotion game on Queen’s Birthday Monday against Newlands College for a position in Division 1.

Another a dominant display against the St Patrick’s Silverstream 2nd XI on the Saturday gave the team confidence to approach the difficult challenge which was played out in terrible weather conditions in Wellington.

Up two nil early, the home team came back to level at two all and three all. With only minutes left it looked like going straight to penalties until a goalkeeping error gave WaiCol the win two minutes from time.

It will be foreign territory for the young team playing in Division 1. The team has only one Year 13 player in the squad so Coach Aaron Perkins is taking a positive approach looking forward to next year. We are not used to playing at such a high level but the attitude and enthusiasm of the young team will ensure that they will lose nothing in terms of effort each week.

‘We know that it will be tough and we won’t be winning every week but it is a real positive for the school and development of football at the College.’

Their first Division 1 game on last Saturday (June 10) saw the team face St Patrick’s Silverstream 1st XI and they lost 4-2.

Specialist coaching is being supplied to our junior sports academy students and to our top two boys teams during the season. It is really exciting for the future of football at the school.
