Curriculum Development

Art by Gabrielle Mansbridge

In the past few years we have been able to introduce an increasing range of subjects to cater for student interests and needs. In Year Nine our timetable structure enables students to tackle courses ranging from the Eight Essential Learning Areas to a wide range of options featuring, for example, French and Japanese, Graphics, and Resistant Materials and Food Technology.

Another thrust for innovation has been in the senior school. We have put in place a Year 11 Transition course which helps students into a variety of work placements within the Wairarapa community and starts them off on the path towards the New Zealand Certificate in Employment Skills. Other new courses include NCEA Level 2 Transition, Maths 202, English 202 and Physical Education. In Year Thirteen, Classical Studies, Graphics and Design, Agriculture, Physical Education, Music and Computer Studies all make a more attractive mix for fifth year students studying for NCEA Level 3.

With the introduction of NCEA major reviews of the senior courses we offer will continue. These developments are actively fostered by a Faculty Committee. In Year 12 courses in Hospitality and Pathways Programmes have been introduced so that more appropriate path ways for our less academically capable students have been created through into the Senior school.

Our aim is to extend all students whatever their capabilities by providing a range of relevant and attractive course opportunities. The fact that we have an over-subscribed enrolment list is one clear signal that the College is going far towards meeting the Curriculum needs of its students.
