Enrolment Information

Introduction

Wairarapa College enrols Year 9 students during Term 4. An enrolment scheme has been necessary to prevent overtaxing of existing resources beyond current capacity and introduced after full consultation with the Ministry of Education.

Enrolment Scheme

There was a trend prior to 1994 for the college roll to increase steadily. At that time overcrowding of the school was imminent. The College Board of Trustees developed an enrolment scheme that took effect from the 1 January 1994. The optimum Year 9 intake and the optimum total roll established at that time continue to the present and are the basis for avoiding overcrowding at the College.

Wairarapa College has always had a broadly balanced roll, including students drawn from a wide cross-section of families throughout the Wairarapa and the College will continue with these traditions. The scheme, developed to meet the requirements of the Education Amendment Act (No. 2) 1998, recognises the following:

  • To maintain the highest possible standard of education delivery to the students attending the college.
  • To avoid overcrowding at the college.
  • To ensure that undue pressure is not placed on the resources of the college.
  • If required, to limit numbers of students enrolling, using pre-established criteria.
  • To give priority of entry to those students living within the college zone.
  • To maintain some flexibility in enrolments, in order not to exclude more students than is necessary to meet the above objectives.
