Wairarapa College has won the Wellington regional Stage Challenge competition with their entry Cosmetic Animal Testing. Over a 100 students and staff left the college at 6.30am Thursday last week and got home at 2am after winning the Open Division. They also won Excellent Stage Use, Excellent Stage Crew, Excellent Set Design and Function, Excellent Visual Enhancement, Excellent Choreography and Excellent Costuming Characters. The students came from Year 9 to Year 13 and included actors and backstage crew.
Wairarapa College performed last after 14 other schools from the Wellington region and Miss Houliston says the students were incredible and produced a great performance with a powerful ending.
The performance was made up of five groups – Pretty Girls, Sad Bunnies, Scientists, Rabid Bunnies and Activists and these groups interacted throughout the piece. Teacher in charge Kath Houliston says the students have been rehearsing since February for three nights a week. In addition they have been making all the costumes and the props which included 400 tinfoiled toilet rolls and hula hoop skirts.
After the awards ceremony Wairarapa College performed the haka Ko Wairarapa with Kuranui College to all the Wellington schools backstage.
