Nau Mai, Haere Mai. Greetings and welcome to Wairarapa College.
This school has significant history and presence in the Wairarapa. We are a large, co-educational college with approximately 1150 students. The students come from a wide spectrum of the community and a wide contributing area. There is a strong bus network that brings students to the school and a co-ed boarding hostel, Poto College House, as well as more localised transport links through walking, biking or private car.
We strive to develop well-rounded, resilient, confident young adults who are ready to enter a modern and changing world. Wairarapa College offers a wide range of educational experiences. Students can select a diverse set of subjects, including online subjects to enhance student choice. Students can follow areas of passion in the junior school, with the digital learning and sports academy classes in core classes, and WaiCol on Stage as a Year Nine option. We are continually developing our digital capacity across the school, to improve educational outcomes for the diverse needs of our students.
For the more kinaesthetic/hands-on learner, there are opportunities in our Technology workshops, Physical Education classes, Art, Drama and Music classes. We are extremely lucky to have a school farm located close to the college. In Years 9 to 13, students can learn about Agriculture and Horticulture in a real-life setting. This includes learning about sheep, olives, beehives, soil and fertiliser testing, cropping, and much more.
The college has expansive grounds in a park-like setting, where many sports are played. Our sports teams travel widely, to Wellington or Palmerston North, for competitive advantage. Our teams are highly regarded and perform extremely well against other schools, locally and nationally. Over the years we have had many New Zealand representatives across a wide spectrum.
Students perform proudly on the cultural stage. We have many groups, including Kapa Haka who perform locally and outside the community with such stunning skill and passion, Cantate, Orchestra, Jazz Band, rock bands, solo/duo artists, and the Pognologists – a male, student-led singing group – add huge value with their humour and harmonious voices. Our drama performers, who thrive on writing and directing their own performances, add enormous energy to the mix of talent at WaiCol.
We welcome visitors or former students of WaiCol to visit the school. We have our centenary approaching and more details will be forthcoming. We are awaiting approval for Stage Two of the property development, which should be announced soon. This will further build on the up-and-coming development and will transform the look and functionality of the school.
We very much look forward to meeting each of you, in order to develop a successful partnership with you, and we look forward to working together in the common pursuit of success for every student.
