Whare Āwhina Supported Learning Centre

Whare Āwhina Supported Learning Centre (SLC) offers a range of programmes for students with special needs. These include the core subjects of Literacy, Numeracy, Physical Education, the Arts, and Inquiry. Whare Āwhina also runs the South Pacific Education Courses (SPEC) programmes, which provide the students with learning experiences that focus on the Key Competencies and developing self-directed learning.

Life Skills, such as caring for personal needs and household tasks, and Sensory programmes are a focus for many of the students, along with alternative Physical Education for very high need students who struggle with general P.E. skills.

Optional subjects such as swimming and attending a local gym are available. In their senior years, many students are involved in work experiences as part of their transition out of the Centre when they turn 21.

For senior students, Whare Āwhina also offers the following:

  • an adapted Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) which gives the students the opportunity to become entrepreneurs and run their own business, with the end goal of selling a product or providing a service to the local community.
  • The Duke of Edinburgh Award which focuses on experiences outside the classroom
  • STARZ – unique to the Whare Āwhina, this programme takes students in their last two years out into the local community once a week for recreation and information purposes
